UA 1176SE Legacy Limiter

Supply an especially DSP-efficient version of UA's original 1176LN-style compressor. The Special Edition preserves similar behavior at nominal settings while accepting more audible differences from LN Legacy at extreme drive.

The Overview

The 1176SE Legacy is the Special Edition derived from 1176LN Legacy, with a revised algorithm designed to reduce DSP use further. The manual says the two are practically alike at nominal settings, but differences can become more noticeable when pushed hard. It is not an additional hardware revision alongside Rev A, Rev E, and AE.

Like LN Legacy, SE omits the input-transformer and I/O distortion modeling used in the modern collection. Its value is efficient envelope control: Input establishes compression drive, the fast Attack and variable Release shape response, and Output restores level. All Button remains supported for an intentionally assertive effect.

Use it when many channels need straightforward 1176-like control and DSP availability is limited. Begin with ordinary ratios and moderate drive, then listen critically if choosing extreme settings rather than assuming a perfect match to LN Legacy or the modern models. Headroom, Mix, Sidechain Filter, and the newer extra multi-button combinations are not available. The linked manual documents these distinctions explicitly.

The Controls

  • Input: Turn clockwise to increase the compression drive. The hardware-style markings are not calibrated dB values, and minimum Input does not necessarily mute the processor. Use moderate settings first; the manual specifically warns that SE can diverge more noticeably from LN Legacy at extreme settings.
  • Output: Compensates the level after compression without changing compression amount. Level-match the bypass comparison after each substantial Input or Ratio change. The SE does not acquire the newer collection's modeled I/O distortion simply by increasing this control.
  • Attack: The shared control range is approximately 20–800 microseconds, faster clockwise. A slower setting allows more initial impact, while a faster one catches brief peaks. Do not infer the AE's 10 ms SLO position or the modern Rev A/Rev E Attack OFF behavior for SE.
  • Release: Approximately 50 ms–1.1 seconds, with the quickest recovery clockwise. Actual behavior remains partly program-dependent. Listen after loud notes or hits: a release that is too slow can hold down the next event, while a very fast one can exaggerate pumping and background movement.
  • Ratio: 4:1, 8:1, 12:1, or 20:1. Choose the general degree of restraint, then revisit Input for the desired amount of reduction. Higher ratios are normally the stronger limiting choices.
  • All Button: Explicitly available in all models, including SE. It changes bias-related compression behavior and timing for a more aggressive, distorted result; it is not simply a fifth clean ratio. The other multi-button combinations belong to the newer collection and are unavailable here.
  • Meter Function: GR displays gain reduction, +4/+8 display output, and OFF disables processing. Unusual GR meter behavior in All Button is documented as part of the 1176 emulation.
  • Absent modern controls: No internal Mix, Headroom, or Sidechain Filter is supplied in SE Legacy. If parallel processing is needed, use host routing and manage levels there. The deliberately reduced algorithm and DSP footprint should guide expectations, especially when comparing heavily driven settings against another 1176 model.
