The Overview
The LA-3A combines the optical approach associated with the LA-2A and solid-state circuitry informed by the 1176LN. It should not be described as another tube LA-2A variant: its amplifier design and resulting character are central to its separate identity.
Its operating method is deliberately simple. Peak Reduction sets the compression drive, Gain restores level, and Comp/Lim chooses the general strength of the action. There are no independent attack and release knobs; the optical behavior is part of the model. With minimum reduction, the signal can still acquire the circuit's coloration.
The linked manual describes the refreshed Teletronix LA-3A Audio Leveler, including HF Emphasis and Mix. Use Emphasis when bass-heavy material pushes the detector too strongly, then blend dry signal if you want the original envelope alongside a more forcefully processed contribution. Set the wet sound and makeup gain before balancing Mix. Meter output readings refer only to the processed signal, an important distinction when evaluating the final parallel blend.

The Controls
- Peak Reduction: Clockwise lowers the trigger threshold and increases reduction. The 0–10 faceplate numbers are arbitrary, not calibrated decibels. Set the meter to GR while finding the right amount. At minimum, compression stops but the modeled circuit remains in the signal path.
- Gain: Adjusts level after reduction and does not change the compression amount. Match it after setting Peak Reduction so louder playback does not obscure the change in envelope. Its 0–10 scale likewise has no particular dB calibration stated in the manual.
- Comp/Lim: COMP is approximately 3:1 and LIM approximately infinity:1. These are approximate because the behavior is nonlinear and frequency dependent. Begin with COMP for general leveling and compare LIM for stronger control; neither setting supplies an independently adjustable attack or release.
- HF Emphasis: The sidechain shelf is flat at its fully clockwise default. Turn counterclockwise to reduce low-frequency detector content and make high frequencies relatively more influential. This can reduce kick-driven gain movement on a bus without directly cutting bass from the audio. Clicking HF resets the default; the +/− labels provide incremental changes.
- Mix: Continuously blends 0% dry-only through 100% wet-only, with 100% the default and 50% an equal blend. Shape the wet signal first, then bring back dry signal for parallel compression. The blend is phase-accurate according to the manual and does not require an auxiliary return.
- Meter Select: GR displays gain reduction; Output displays relative level after Gain; Off disables the processor. The meter dims when bypassed. Output metering reads the wet signal only, so use the host's meter to evaluate the final mixed output.
- Bypass/resource behavior: Meter Select Off is the plug-in's processing bypass rather than a tone-only compression defeat. DSP use is reduced only when LoadLock allows it; a dim meter does not imply guaranteed resource savings under every configuration.
