Teletronix LA-2A Legacy Leveler

Deliver first-generation LA-2A optical leveling with a compact control set and reduced DSP demand. It omits the newer collection's transformer/I/O distortion modeling and Emphasis control.

The Overview

LA-2A Legacy is the original UAD optical-leveler emulation, rather than a fourth modern model alongside Silver, Gray, and LA-2. The manual explains that it was designed around the original platform's DSP limits and leaves out transformer and I/O distortion characteristics. That distinction can be useful when lower processing cost and less modeled distortion are priorities.

The fundamental workflow is optical leveling: Peak Reduction determines how far the signal enters compression, and Gain sets the compensated output. There are no separate attack and release controls; the emulated response is tied to the program rather than freely chosen timing values.

Use it on sustained vocals, bass, strings, or other parts needing straightforward level control. Set reduction first, restore loudness second, and compare Compress with Limit in context. Do not assign it the Silver, Gray, or LA-2 time-constant identity merely because they share a manual. The manual explicitly excludes Emphasis from Legacy, and its LA-2-only Mix addition is not a Legacy control.

The Controls

  • Peak Reduction: Turn clockwise to lower the threshold and increase compression. The common manual specifies a threshold range of 0 to −40 dB, while the printed 0–100 scale is arbitrary. Watch Gain Reduction and listen to sustained notes or phrases rather than choosing a number in isolation.
  • Gain: Up to 40 dB of output compensation according to the shared control description. It does not alter compression amount. Adjust after Peak Reduction and compare at matched loudness; its faceplate is not a calibrated dB scale.
  • Compress/Limit: Approximate ratios are 3:1 and infinity:1 respectively. Actual behavior is nonlinear and frequency dependent, so Limit should not be presented as a modern guaranteed brickwall ceiling. Compare the two modes for the desired degree of restraint.
  • Meter Knob / VU: Gain Reduction shows attenuation; +4 and +10 show output. At +4, a zero reading represents +4 dB output. Switch between reduction and output views when setting compensation.
  • On/Power: Turns complete processing on or off. With UAD DSP, resource savings depend on LoadLock. Minimum Peak Reduction stops compression but is not the same operation as power bypass.
  • Legacy exclusions: There is no R37/Emphasis control here, and no LA-2 Mix control. The collection's modeled transformer/output-distortion tone-box claims should not be transferred to Legacy, whose reduced modeling is explicitly documented. There are also no user attack or release knobs to set.
