Pultec-Pro Legacy EQ

Combine the original Pultec EQP-1A and MEQ-5 emulations for low/high contouring and additional midrange shaping. This Legacy processor prioritizes lower DSP use rather than the modern collection's transformer and I/O distortion models.

The Overview

Pultec-Pro Legacy joins the EQP-1A program equalizer and MEQ-5 midrange equalizer in one original-generation UAD plug-in. The combination covers low shelving, variable-width high boost, high attenuation, and the MEQ-5's overlapping midrange peaks and dip.

The linked collection manual explicitly identifies this combined Legacy variant and explains that the original Pultec models omit transformer and I/O distortion characteristics. It is therefore not equivalent to loading the modern EQP-1A and MEQ-5 with all of their nonlinear behavior and convenience controls.

Use the program section for broad bass/treble balance, then the midrange section for body and presence that need more specific attention. The low boost/cut interaction and overlapping mid bands encourage listening to the final combined curve rather than treating each knob independently. Compare at matched level using host compensation where needed.

Manual coverage limit: the current manual describes shared EQ controls and explicitly names the Pro Legacy Enable switch, but does not provide a standalone exhaustive Pro Legacy global-control specification. Modern ±12 dB Bypass/Gain trim and frequency-label shortcuts are not attributed to this entry.

The Controls

  • EQP-1A Low Frequency / Boost / Attenuation: Select 20, 30, 60, or 100 Hz, then set boost and cut separately. Their curves do not cancel exactly, so using both can add weight while tightening an adjacent region. Do not assume the amount knobs are calibrated dB values; the linked descriptions do not provide those ranges.
  • EQP-1A High Frequency: Select the high-boost center at 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12, or 16 kHz. This selector governs boost, not high attenuation.
  • HF Bandwidth / Boost: Bandwidth changes the spread of the high boost, with lower values narrower. Boost sets its amount. Adjust them together while listening for whether the result is focused presence or a broader high-frequency lift.
  • ATTEN SEL / HF Attenuation: The separate high shelf cut offers 5, 10, or 20 kHz, with its own amount knob. Balance this against high boost when the desired contour is more nuanced than simply brighter or darker.
  • MEQ-5 Low Peak Frequency / Boost: Select 200, 300, 500, 700, or 1000 Hz and add low-mid energy. This section boosts only; use Dip for removal.
  • MEQ-5 Dip Frequency / Amount: Select 200, 300, 500, 700 Hz, or 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7 kHz. The attenuation band overlaps both peak sections, so check the combined response after each change.
  • MEQ-5 High Peak Frequency / Boost: Select 1.5, 2, 3, 4, or 5 kHz and set the upper-mid boost. No independent bandwidth knob is documented for the MEQ-5 sections.
  • EQ Enable switches: The shared section descriptions distinguish switching equalization out from completely bypassing the modeled path. Use the relevant section's EQ switch to isolate its contribution.
  • Enable / coverage boundary: The MEQ-5 EQ Enable description specifically directs Pro Legacy users to Enable for true bypass. It does not establish a modern output-gain knob for this combined Legacy model. Use host-level compensation rather than assuming ±12 dB trim, and do not assume the newer frequency-label cycling shortcuts work. CPS and KCS labels mean Hz and kHz respectively.
