LA-2A Silver

Apply the collection's fastest LA-2A optical response for versatile leveling, including more transient-rich sources. It combines program-dependent compression with modeled tube electronics and adjustable detector emphasis.

The Overview

The Silver model captures a late-1960s Bill Putnam LA-2A with its original T4B optical gain-reduction module. The manual identifies its faster time constant as the most broadly adaptable of the three modern variants, extending the familiar vocal and bass applications to drums and percussion.

Faster is relative to the other Teletronix models: this remains a program-dependent optical leveler, not a compressor with freely adjustable attack and release. The T4 element's multistage recovery follows the material, while differences in electronics, knee, headroom, and frequency dependence distinguish this version from Gray and LA-2.

A practical setup is to select Compress, raise Peak Reduction until the dynamic movement suits the source, and compensate with Gain. Compare Limit for stronger control and Emphasis for less bass-led detection. Keep listening to the recovery between phrases or hits rather than relying only on the meter. Minimum reduction still passes through the modeled signal path; Power gives full bypass. The manual's additional parallel Mix control applies to LA-2 rather than Silver.

The Controls

  • Peak Reduction: Controls the compression threshold from 0 to −40 dB. Clockwise means more reduction, but the 0–100 panel scale is arbitrary. Set the meter to GR and adjust for the source rather than translating the faceplate directly into decibels.
  • Gain: Provides up to 40 dB of output compensation and does not set reduction. Adjust it independently after Peak Reduction. With Peak Reduction at minimum, this model still passes the signal through its modeled circuitry, allowing tone without compression.
  • Compress/Limit: Select approximately 3:1 compression or approximately infinity:1 limiting. Actual ratios vary with frequency and nonlinear optical behavior. Compare both at similar output loudness rather than expecting an exact brickwall limiter.
  • Emphasis / +HF−: The fully clockwise default leaves the sidechain unfiltered. Turning counterclockwise reduces low-frequency detector content, increasing the relative influence of high frequencies. This can prevent low notes from dominating the gain movement without applying a direct low cut to the audible signal.
  • Meter Knob: Gain Reduction shows attenuation; +4 or +10 shows output level. A zero reading in +4 mode corresponds to +4 dB output. Use both views when balancing dynamics against the resulting level.
  • On/Power: Bypasses all processing; disabling DSP use is subject to LoadLock. There are no attack or release knobs to override the Silver's inherent time response. Do not infer the LA-2-only Mix addition from the collection-wide screenshots or prose.
