Kontakt 7

Loads and performs sample libraries through a searchable preset browser, while retaining deep instrument construction, multisampling, scripting and multitimbral mixing.

The Overview

Browser-led access to a sampling engine

KONTAKT 7 combines a library-oriented Browser with the underlying Sample → Zone → Group → Instrument → Multi structure. Sound Type and Character tags, product filters, text search and favorites help locate presets across installed content. The rack then provides the MIDI, level and output context for the selected instruments.

Library controls versus engine controls

Each Instrument can expose a custom Performance View tailored to its own samples and programming. That is the normal place to adjust a library's musical behavior. Deeper Instrument Edit mode exposes groups, sample mapping, wave editing, playback sources, modulation and effects where editing is supported. It is therefore important not to confuse one library's interface with a standard control layout for KONTAKT itself.

A flexible production container

Load one instrument for a straightforward part or combine multiple instruments in a Multi with separate MIDI and audio assignments. Snapshots preserve useful variations, while voice and memory information help manage demanding arrangements. A practical workflow is to audition with the Browser, confirm the loaded instrument's response, balance it in the rack and only then enter detailed editing if the library's own controls cannot achieve the desired result.

The Controls

Browser and auditioning

Open Browser from the Main Control Panel. Use Search, Brand, Sound Type, Character, product and bank filters together to narrow the results. Favorites provides a personal shortlist. Clicking a result auditions it; double-clicking loads it into the current slot. Audition controls set or mute preview volume, and Pin keeps the Browser available while exploring. Import Content manages compatible custom/non-player content rather than downloading arbitrary libraries.

Rack performance

The Instrument Header separates MIDI Channel from Output Channel. Assign the former for triggering and the latter for audio mixing. Volume, Pan, Tune, Solo and Mute set the instrument's place in the Multi. Snapshot View exposes loading and saving variations; Info View reveals MIDI/audio configuration and resource information. PV shows the library's custom Performance View, whose controls vary by instrument.

Instrument Options provides whole-instrument settings such as voice handling and key/velocity range. Voices shows current use and Max Voices limits it. If sustained notes are being stolen, check that limit as well as host CPU. The Memory/Purge controls manage loaded samples. Purging after a representative performance may save memory, but it can remove unplayed velocity layers or interfere with round-robin/random behavior; reload all samples restores them.

Edit mode and samples

Use the wrench to enter Instrument Edit mode when the instrument supports editing. Displayed Group determines which group you see; Edited Groups/Edit All Groups determines which groups actually receive changes. Verify both before altering a source or envelope.

The Mapping Editor places samples into key and velocity Zones. The Wave Editor handles sample loops, slices and destructive edits. Group Editor organizes sets of Zones that share playback settings. Source Module controls playback, and its Modulation Router connects evolving control sources. Group Insert Effects act on individual voices; instrument-level buses, inserts and sends operate farther down the combined signal path. Script Editor handles custom behavior and interfaces.

Global and saving workflow

The Main Control Panel/View options reveal master controls, side-pane tools and outputs as needed. Outputs provides configured channel strips and auxiliary channels for routing the Multi to the host. Use the on-screen keyboard to check playable and switch ranges, and Info Pane for contextual help. Save a snapshot or user preset for a useful variation, an Instrument for construction changes, and a Multi for the assembled rack. Do not assume saving one of these substitutes for keeping its sample assets available.
