Galaxy Tape Echo

Combines multi-head tape delay and spring reverb for rhythmic echoes, worn-tape modulation, spacious ambience, and self-oscillating dub effects.

The Overview

Tape Heads Plus Spring Reverb

Galaxy Tape Echo models an RE-201-style system with three playback heads and a spring reverb. Head Select determines which heads and reverb combination are active; Echo Rate changes the shared tape speed. The head times therefore move together in fixed proportions rather than acting like three independent digital delays.

Input drive, tape age, feedback, and the splice all contribute to the character. The processor can deliver a restrained slap or ambience, but it also supports unstable repeats and deliberate self-oscillation. Bass and Treble affect the echo path, not the dry audio or the spring reverb.

Building a Sound

Start with a head combination, set its timing, and add feedback gradually. Balance Echo Volume and Reverb Volume separately, then position each effect with its own pan control. Wet Solo makes the processor suitable for an auxiliary return.

For throws, mute Input Send instead of bypassing the entire plug-in. Existing echoes can continue to circulate. Use Power if you need to clear the tape echo and restart an escalating feedback loop.

The Controls

Input and Tape Heads

  • Input Volume: Sets input drive into the modeled circuit. Reducing it gives a cleaner signal; compensate with Output Volume rather than adding input saturation.
  • Peak Lamp / VU Meter: Indicate input-related level. Feedback also influences their readings.
  • Head Select: Chooses among 12 echo/reverb configurations, including echo-only and reverb-only modes.
  • Echo Rate: Varies tape speed and all active head delays together. Clockwise shortens delay; moving it in real time creates pitch transitions.
  • Delay Displays: Show each active head's time. Inactive heads show dashes.
  • Tempo Sync: Uses host-tempo values; physical head relationships still constrain the resulting rhythms.

Repeats and Tone

Feedback controls recirculation and can reach self-oscillation. Multiple active heads make the feedback pattern more complex.

Bass and Treble shape the tape echoes only. Their center positions are neutral.

Input Send mutes new input to the echo for performance-style throws; it does not act on reverb-only mode.

Echo and Reverb Mix

  • Echo Volume / Echo Pan: Set the echo level and stereo position.
  • Reverb Volume / Reverb Pan: Independently set the spring reverb level and position.
  • Wet Solo: Removes dry audio for an effects return.
  • Output Volume: Adjusts the full output by up to 20 dB in either direction. Its minimum is not a mute.

Panning is unavailable in mono-output operation. Echo and reverb level controls only matter when their corresponding effects are selected.

Tape Condition and Power

Tape Age selects New, Used, or Old tape behavior, changing fidelity and mechanical instability.

Splice retriggers the tape splice location. The audible disturbance arrives later as the splice reaches the playback heads and transport, not necessarily at the instant of clicking.

Power provides overall bypass and clears the echo, which is useful for stopping an unwanted self-oscillating loop.
