The Overview

The SVT-3 PRO offers a more elaborate tone-shaping route than a simple vintage bass head. A padded input and preamp Gain control establish drive, the bass/mid/treble section provides broad voicing, and a selectable mid frequency places emphasis where the bass needs definition. Tube Gain changes the modeled tube behavior, while a separate graphic EQ offers another layer of adjustment.

The FX Rack extends the amp into a recording system: a gate manages pauses, pre/post filters control low-end buildup and high-frequency edge, and Recording Chains supply captured cabinet and studio-path combinations. Power Soak lets the power-stage setting and the practical output level be approached separately.

Start with a clean DI and an appropriate input level, choose the amp's midrange voice, then audition cabinet chains in the context of the track. Reserve graphic EQ for finer placement and compensate its level when comparing bypassed and active settings. Apollo Unison operation is an additional hardware-dependent tracking workflow; the manual also describes keeping the recorded DI dry for later re-amping.

The Controls

Input and amplifier voicing

  • −15 dB pads a hot bass signal. Watch the Peak/Mute LED when setting Gain, which controls preamp drive; frequent overload indication is a reason to reduce gain or engage the pad.
  • BRT adds input brightness, while HI and LO apply additional high- and low-frequency contouring. They are distinct switches, not alternate labels for the tone knobs.
  • Bass offers ±12 dB at 50 Hz. Midrange offers ±15 dB around the selected Frequency: 220 Hz, 450 Hz, 800 Hz, 1.6 kHz, or 3 kHz. Use the lower positions for body and the higher positions for articulation.
  • Treble provides +14/−19 dB at 5 kHz. Master sets the overall amplifier level.
  • Tube Gain changes the tube-stage response. The manual describes a more dynamic response at 10 and thicker, more compressed behavior at 0, with the difference becoming more apparent as the power amp is driven.

Graphic EQ

Graphic EQ engages the nine sliders; their center positions are flat. The Active LED confirms operation. Level applies only while the EQ is engaged, so use it to compensate for boosts or cuts before judging the tonal change. Power bypasses the plug-in.

FX Rack

  • Noise Gate, Threshold, and Range set pause reduction. A high threshold can also remove the end of a sustained note; the Closed LED helps identify this.
  • Tight / Smooth cut low and high frequencies respectively. Their Pre / Post / Off settings choose whether filtering changes the amp's input or its processed tone.
  • Input Gain adjusts drive into the preamp independently of the source recording. Internal Power Soak attenuates the modeled power-amp result without replacing its driven behavior with a lower master setting.
  • Rec Chains, plus/minus buttons, and Auto / Bar select or automatically audition captured cabinet/recording setups. Auto advances at one-, two-, or four-bar intervals. Horn adds the separate horn impulse contribution.
  • Cabinet Bypass removes the internal cabinet treatment for an external cabinet or another speaker-processing route.
