Universal Audio
1176AE
Anniversary Edition FET compression that extends the 1176 approach with a gentler 2:1 ratio and a fixed 10 ms slow-attack option. It can retain more transient impact while still supplying modeled 1176 amplifier coloration.

The Overview
The 1176AE represents Universal Audio's 40th Anniversary hardware, not merely a different skin for the Rev A or Rev E. Its defining changes are a 2:1 ratio and a special 10 ms attack position, opening up settings that are substantially gentler or slower than the conventional 1176 range.
The basic workflow remains input-driven compression followed by output level adjustment. Both the modeled electronics and the program-dependent release contribute to the result; the manual specifically distinguishes the AE and Bluestripe release behavior from Blackface revisions. Accordingly, compare versions by listening and matching reduction rather than copying knob positions.
Try the lower ratio for leveling a vocal or instrument, or the slow attack when the initial hit should remain prominent. More forceful ratios and multi-button modes still provide assertive limiting and coloration. Modern plug-in additions supply internal headroom adjustment, sidechain tilt filtering, and parallel blending. Compression-free coloration is available by disengaging the ratio buttons, rather than treating the AE's SLO position as an off switch.

The Controls
- Input: Raises drive into the model and increases compression as you turn clockwise. Its markings are not literal calibrated dB values. Set this while watching GR, then reassess distortion and loudness rather than assuming input gain is purely a threshold adjustment.
- Output: Restores or reduces the post-compression level without changing compression amount. This model includes output-stage nonlinearities, so increased Output can also affect color.
- Attack: The normal 1176 range is approximately 20–800 microseconds, with faster action clockwise. At the fully counterclockwise SLO position, the AE instead uses its distinctive fixed 10 ms attack. This lets more transient material through; it does not bypass compression and is not the Rev A/Rev E Attack OFF function.
- Release: Approximately 50 ms to 1.1 seconds, faster clockwise. Recovery is program-dependent, so sustained loud passages can recover differently from isolated transients at the same setting. Listen for pumping or overly persistent attenuation.
- Ratio: The AE offers 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, and 20:1; it does not substitute the other models' 12:1 position for its 2:1 option. Shift-click selects supported multi-button combinations. All Button gives a changing, more distorted compression response. Disengage every ratio for electronics coloration without compression.
- Headroom / HR: Choose 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, or 28 dB, default 16. Lower displayed values increase available headroom; higher values make compression and nonlinear color easier to provoke. Set it before fine-tuning Input and avoid automation that could create level jumps.
- Mix: Continuously balances dry and wet, with fully wet as the default. A 50% setting makes an equal blend; use it after shaping the wet envelope.
- Sidechain Filter: The fixed 10 dB/decade tilt makes the detector less bass-sensitive. Toggle beneath Release; it changes detection rather than applying a bass cut to the audio.
- Meter Function: Select GR, +4, or +8 for reduction or output metering. OFF bypasses the plug-in. Unusual GR movement with multiple ratios reflects the modeled hardware behavior.
